Sir Peter Blake x Paul Weller

15 July 2024

You can expect great things when the Godfather and the Modfather collide. Peter Blake, the Godfather of British Pop Art, has an illustrious history of music collaborations, from The Beatles to Oasis, Paul Weller to (one of his great musical heroes) Brian Wilson. So, having already worked with him on Stanley Road, it was only natural that Weller and Blake would reunite for Paul’s new album, "66”.

As Peter says: “Paul’s brief was very specific. In celebration of his 66th birthday and the title of his latest album, he simply wanted me to interpret that number. Back in the sixties I’d made an artwork, like a butcher’s sign, that was an old six pence (6d as it was written in old money) and this reference became the starting point." The artwork was painted on board and given a border of red and blue stripes, a familiar motif of Peter’s work.

If you’d like to watch Peter and Paul discussing the making of this cover, you can do so right here. It’s entertaining on many levels, not least when the interviewer gamely asks them both what makes this Peter Blake artwork so instantly recognisable and Paul Weller says “well, his name’s right there at the bottom”…
