The Odyssey

We chatted with Matt Taylor about a very specific challenge that accompanied the making of this artwork:
"A project like this one - making art well in advance of seeing the film - posed an interesting challenge: no one knew what the movie would be. The secrecy meant that we only had a few glances at trailers and production stills. Knowing the rough shape of the story from the original text, I tried to do something that would work on a metaphorical level - Odysseus’ ship being battered by the waves, the flames of the underworld creeping up towards him. Even if that specific scene didn’t occur in the film, it carried the right tone - and it was a relief when I saw the movie that it felt like I’d got it just about right.”

And Doaly on targeting a particular facet of such a sprawling story:
"The Odyssey has so many stories and adventures within it that have permeated modern culture, it was a hard decision on what aspect to base my poster on but I thought the Trojan Horse was a wonderful framing device for the struggle of Odysseus’ men. I also wanted my poster to have a timeless quality to it, something that has seen the passage of time and aged along with it.”
