IS IT A BIRD? IS IT A PLANE? NOPE, IT’S DOALY!

This new self-initiated Superman artwork sees Doaly offer a new compositional approach to the stereotypical hero poster.

Alongside our commercial artists' commissioned projects, many find authorial practice a vital part of their working regime. Following their own brief, getting personal creative ambitions off their chests, it’s an opportunity to explore their own methodologies and push their visual language in new directions. Doaly is one such artist and while the commissioning process, working alongside a creative team, can lead to great moments of artistic serendipity, there isn’t always the opportunity to be experimental on a live brief.

In this new artwork, Doaly not only questions the standard heroic layout of a film poster, but also plays with a more textured painterly aesthetic.

"Passion is the main reason that spurs me on to create a piece of art without a commission or client on the other end, it’s an excuse to try something new, a composition, technique or style that you’ve not had the chance to do in your commercial work. I really wanted to draw a cloudscape, a romanticised version of a Superman poster that didn’t rely on a likeness or a pose front and centre on the page, but more the idea of the man and how that works with your own imagination and what touchpoint you have for him. All this is in an aim to find an emotional resonance through your work with the audience.”
