Anna Higgie x Upfest

16 July 2024

Australian born Anna Higgie is now settled into the dockland vibes of Bristol and this year, after a temporary break from large scale work, has hit the walls again with a stunning mural for Upfest. We checked in with Anna to see how she got on joining this massive annual celebration of street art.

"In May 2024 I was invited to participate in Upfest - Bristol’s annual celebration of street and mural art which takes place on and around North Street, Bedminster. It was my first time painting at the festival - and also the first mural I had painted in nearly two years after taking a step back from muralling to focus on my illustration practice after the birth of my daughter in 2022. The piece I designed was based on a chintz fabric I saw in the V&A. I first made a digital drawing in procreate which I then used as a guide. The mural was painted freehand using Dulux masonry paint over 4 days.

It was such a joy to be back up on my feet and out and about painting again after such a long break - and Upfest was such a welcoming place to do it! I met so many other artists and members of the public who had travelled from far and wide to come to the event, and every single person I encountered was so friendly, supportive and enthusiastic about mural art!

Already looking forward to returning to upfest in 2025 and hopefully painting something bigger and better.
