A Blink Of Ink: A Jill Calder Exhibition

09 June 2022

Introducing A Blink Of Ink: Artist Jill Calder’s talent shines brightly in her latest exhibition at Falkirk’s Callendar House!

Based in Fife, CIA's Jill Calder has been working as an illustrator since 1993. She is also a calligrapher and a digital artist with a love of drawing, and a passion for bright colour.

This exhibition, open till Sept 2022 gives you a glimpse into Jill’s world from her beginnings at art college in Cumbria in the late 1980s to her current collaboration with English Heritage.

A favourite piece in my A Blink of Ink exhibition at Callendar House is this little folded handmade book, ‘Rose’.

"It was a collaboration in 2018 with Molly, then age 6, who drew the pictures and, with a little instruction, folded the paper into book form. In a role reversal I wrote the words! I love making books and there’s a whole display cabinet in the exhibition showing a selection of my handmade books and tools. Meanwhile, 4 years on from making ‘Rose’ Molly continues to be as creative as ever!"

Time for a sneak peak into Jill's creative toolkit - art materials, her favourite pencils, inky tissues and peeking out under them one of Jill's @thegoodshipillustration quirk excavator drawings! Jill's love of ink shines through in this exhibition and examples of her designs include editorial commissions, gallery work and book art.

Introduced to the idea of illustrating picture books back in 2011, Jill has since immersed herself in the children's book world. This has created many opportunities for Jill including working with children in schools and libraries, both locally and internationally!
